Using "Var" in measure instead of creating many measures may improve performance.
If you create measures seperately, please drop "var" in each measure, they should be like:
measure1=sum([column])
You could down load DAX Studio/Performance Analyzer(in Power BI) to monitor performance of measures.

@bgt these VAR will be separate measures, and if these are getting used in multiple measures, keep it separate and use it in the measures, cascading of measures is ok.
