How update reports without personal gateway?

Hi,

I am a new user of Power Bi.

I just can't figure out how to solve the one below.

How can I update reports at specific times if I do not use a personal gateway?

Is that possible?

Hi @Frixel ,

Have you open the ONE DRIVE REFRESH in Power BI Service?

BTW, check the documents below, i think it will help you understand data refresh in Power BI.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-data.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-desktop-file-onedrive.

Best Regards,

@Frixel

It depends....

if your source is an excel file located in OneDrive folder (for business), the report will refresh automatically without a gateway.

if your sources are located on a local computer, DW, etc, then you need a gateway.

I'm not sure if there are other exceptions to this behaviour.

And if you mean an "Excel" file, is that also .csv file that is on onedrive?

And how when a file is on Sharepoint? is that also automatically renewed?

@Frixel

Yes, a csv file will work also, as long as it is on Onedrive for business. It doesn't work for personal Onedrive licenses.

Sorry, I can't help with the Sharepoint question. (I don't use Sharepoint....)

I have made a .csv report on onedrive (business) and saved it.

but i don`t see the update in power Bi with the new data...

What is the time interval that the report is updated in power Bi?
Can I also set that?

@Frixel

"OneDrive - Business – If you have OneDrive for Business and you sign into it with the same account you sign into Power BI with, this is by-far the most effective way to keep your work in Excel Power BI Desktop, or a .CSV file and your dataset, reports, and dashboards in Power BI in-sync. Because both Power BI and OneDrive are in the cloud, Power BI connects to your file on OneDrive about every hour. If any changes are found, your dataset, reports, and dashboards are automatically updated in Power BI."

@Frixel

Have you uplodaded your PBI report to the PBI service? Are the credentials for the Power BI Service and OneDrive the same?

hat do you mean with

"Have you uplodaded your PBI report to the PBI service? "

@Frixel

The way Power BI works basically is you create your report on Power BI Desktop (import data from data sources, clean up/transform data ect in Power Query, create the model and measures etc..) and then upload the report to the Power BI service (online), though you can also create reports directly in the service if you wish. From the service, you share the report with users or you can acess the report from anywhere (other computers, tablets, phones...).  This is where you set up the gateway, if need be, to keep your report up to date with data changes. So the Desktop app is where you author the reports; the service is where you "consume" the data so to speak. In order to keep the data up to date in Desktop, you need to  refresh the data sources manually (it is not designed to update automatically). Once it's uploaded to the service, the data can be updated automatically- setting up a Gateway or through OneDrive.

To do this you need to set up an account in the service, and to upload the reports to the service, you need to login to the service on Desktop.

Check the documentation, for example here:

Publish and share reports
