How to post Power BI desktop files to share point

Hi,

Currently I have my Power BI desktop files over my local hard drive, am trying to save the same files over sharepoint as my team would also work on those desktop files, since its on my local drive they do not have access to the files.

Kindly suggest how to enable the existing file in sharepoint

Hi @Anonymous ,

Based on your description, you could create a Team site and upload your pbix files to it.

When you want to create a place where the members of a work group or project team can collaborate on project deliverables, plan an event, track status, or exchange ideas, you want a Team Site. In a Team Site, all members are content authors where we jointly create and edit content. Think of team sites as a place where work gets done. My project team needs a place to collaboratively work on deliverables. Even though we have individual assignments, we are collectively collaborating to create one or more assets. Our project team needs a Team Site.

Hi @Anonymous,

Please refer to the following tutorial.

PowerShell to create Team Site in SharePoint Online - SharePoint Gems

Then you could upload your pbix files.

Hi @v-yuaj-msft

I was able to upload the file however the file isnt getting refreshed when am working backened, do i need to do something with it to fix it?

Hi @Anonymous ,

If you just would like to share your pbix files with your colleagues, you could re-upload your pbix files after refreshing your reports. It is a manual and lagging process. But if you want a nearly real-time refresh when you workbackend, I think you may try to embed the report in Sharepoint Online.

Please refer to the following tutorial.

Embed a report web part in SharePoint Online - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

Please note:

For Embed in SharePoint Online reports to work, the following is required:

  • A Power BI Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) license or a Power BI Premium capacity (EM or P SKU) with a Power BI license.
  • The Power BI web part for SharePoint Online requires Modern Pages.
  • To consume an embedded report, users must sign in to Power BI service to activate their Power BI license.

If they don't have the above licenses or accounts and if you do not mind opening your report to the public, you could try to use "Publish to web". (It is not recommended because all people who have the link of report can review it without license requirement)

Publish to web from Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

Hope that's what you were looking for.

Best Regards,

Yuna

The best way I've found is to have each person that might modify the file sync the SharePoint document library to their local computer.  That way, you can open/edit/save the file on SharePoint directly (instead of always downloading/uploading it).

Sync SharePoint files and folders - SharePoint (microsoft.com)

Hi @mahoneypat

Thanks for the reply, I get this however am the only devoloper of pbi desktop file in my team, my peers doesnt work on it, so to set up as a backup for me i was trying to see a way where the pbi file is available on sharepoint file.
For now working excel files are on sharepoint and my peers are able to update data, however they would not get chance to refresh the PBI desktop file as my backup..
