How to disconnect desktop file from Power BI Dataset

Hi all, I have a very simple issue and it is driving me nuts:

I created a dataset and published it to a workspace. Then I created a report (in desktop) with a live-connection to that dataset. So far all works great.

Now I want to use the report file as a "template" to start a new - unrelated - report from. So I deleted all the visuals and tabs that I don't need, but now I want to disconnect from the dataset.

How do I do that?

So I tried it again:

- This time I was told to create a DirectQuery connection

- The DirectQuery connection was established, but I couldn't load the data

- No problem however, because now I could delete the data source through 'Data Source Settings' (as shown in your screenprint)

No idea why, but it works...

Hi, @OlafCdeWit

You need to go to File > Options and settings > Options, and in the Preview features section, select the DirectQuery for Power BI datasets and Analysis Services checkbox to enable this preview feature.

After you restart Power BI Desktop for the change to take effect, you can click the Make changes to this model to use DirectQuery for live connections.2.png

Then you can go to File > Options and settings > Data source setting, and delete the connections.

Hi Community Support Team _ Eason,

I followed the steps (already had the preview feature enabled) but after the dialogue message that tells you to add a local model I get the following error:

Hi, @OlafCdeWit

Have you tried checking your internet connection?

I tested again on my side, and no similar error occurred.

Have a look at tools like DAX Studio or ALM Toolkit.  They allow you to modify the data source connection queries.
