Getting my data broken down by states?

Hi all!

I have my data broken down by states in one column but I want to be able to pull it in by regions with specific states.

How can I easily do that? Im new into power BI and really trying but feeling awful that I cant get it.

@bv27718n again what is the definition of the region? Do you need to be more specific? Maybe there is a wiki page or other web URL that has states by region which you can pull in Power bI but first, you need to define when you say region, what does it actually mean?

I agree with @parry2k , you first need to define the concept of regions, nothing that indicates in your file.

wont let me PM. I was only working with the elite files, thats what i needed to see the visuals i have. v

that file should be correct, the chart on region is killing me, not sure how to make it show by region with the states that are actually in the region. last thing, can you explain how to do the correct formula for the percent change in the pf elite tab. it showss variance number only but i wanna try to get percent in it,

okay so i would do west, south, mid west and north east. within that would be the states, but how do i define that and add that in I guess

Yes, you have 2 options

  1. Did you watch the video? if so then you should be able to group your regions
  2. Download this file into your model and link the table to your Elite table at the State code
  3. https://github.com/cphalpert/census-regions/blob/master/us%20census%20bureau%20regions%20and%20divis...

@bv27718n well how you expect it to work if you don't have region information, you need to bring that in. How you define region?

thanks for the help. Another question is, I created regions which is great, but when I go to create a group for say, west states only, it only shows the region not states. how do you rectify that?

So I get how to group regions in for the PF elite tab, and that works great. What I dont get though is in the tap for region, I want to show by region and the states within the region, but if i do a new group it will only show region names on the x axis not state names. i tried fixing but it wont group to show that. Additionally, I am lost how to do a correct formula for pf elite, the var change. i see the number change but i want to say this is my percent change year over year. it keeps giving errors.

Hi @bv27718n ,

You could add both region and state to x-axis and use drill down feature at the top right of the visual.

Best Regards,

Jay
