Gateway Data Source not available in PowerBI Dekstop

Thank you in advance for your time and replies.

I have setup an on-premise gateway to a local SQL data source. No problems with installing, configuring or registering the gateway.

I configured the gateway and the data source (Windows credentials) in PowerBI. Tests are successful to both the gateway and the data source.

Lastly, I installed PowerBI desktop and attempted to retreive the data from the PowerBI service option. Here lies the issue. The gateway shows, but when I try to branch out the data source; nothing appears. I can confirm that other workspaces branch out to their data sources correctly so it seems to be realted to only the gateway at this time.

  • There are no errors in the PowerBI gateway logs.
  • Gateway is not on a domain controller.
  • SQL 2016 standard - defaul instance, default port
  • Using gateway created Windows service account
  • I have recreated the entire gateway.
  • Restarted server.
  • There is only one PowerBI user
  • Tested DirectQuery (matched server and database name) from PowerBI Desktop with a named pipes issue. Will enable the protocol and restart service outside production hours.

@rnunn,

Based on your description, you want to connect to gateway data source from Power BI Desktop, right? If that is the case, it is not possible.

Gateway is only used for Power BI Service. After you connect to SQL Server database in Power BI Desktop, create reports and publish reports to Power BI Service, you can use gateway to refresh your dataset in Power BI Service. For more details, please review the following article.
