Format Date in Matrix from Streaming Push Dataset

Hi Everyone:

I'm using a Streaming Push Dataset inside PowerBI to record the status of monitored internal applications.   The dates are coming in as UTC (Zulu); however, I need them to display in abbreviated local time.  As you can see in the below picture, there is a notable amount of wasted space in the report:

wastedSpace.png

The wasted space becomes even more of a problem when the report is embedded into a Dashboard.

For one thing, since my monitoring tool only checks in about four times an hour, there is no need to display the seconds or year in the date.  Instead of a Date like "05/28/20 04:22:00 PM" either "05/28 04:22 PM" or "05/28 1622" would be sufficient.  Unfortunately, since the source is a Streaming DataSet, both Power Query M and the Column Tools Formatting options seem to be unavailable for me.  I also tried creating a Measure of the original streaming Date and formatting that Measure, but the Matrix Visualization will not allow me to use a Measure as a "Row Parameter".

Can I fix this without having to either write my own Custom Visualization or scrap the Streaming Dataset for something like Azure Table Storage or SQL?

NOTE: Azure Table Storage or SQL will likely get around this problem but they will both incur a very small fee and my understanding is that Power BI Streaming Push Datasets were specifically designed for real time reporting situations.  With that said, I have not personally seen much benefit from using Power BI Streaming Push Datasets (in this particular scenario).  I've actually seen Streaming Push Datasets to be more hassle than what they are worth when Azure SQL Server with DirectQuery would probably do just as good and be easier to maintain.  One thing in particular that is seriously annoying about Power BI Streaming Push Datasets is that it's awkward to examine data and delete or correct bad data.  With Azure SQL and/or Azure Table Storage, examining the data and/or correcting it is much more straightforward.

@Shawn_Eary  I don't think you can change the model when connected to streaming dataset, one way could be to create own dataset and then use RestAPI to push data to the dataset.

I would  Kudos if my solution helped. 👉 If you can spend time posting the question, you can also make efforts to give Kudos whoever helped to solve your problem. It is a token of appreciation!
