Error in opening an accdb file

My PowerBi version:2.34.4372.501 32-bit (April 2016)

Microsoft Access version:2016 32 bit

when opening an accdb file, there arises a problem:

Unable to connect
Details: "Microsoft Access: The 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' provider is not registered on the local machine. The 32-bit version of the Access Database Engine 2010 Access Database Engine OLEDB provider is required to connect to read this type of file. To download the client software, visit the following site: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=285987."

So what's the problem

Hi AbelNewton,
I can successfully connect to your accdb file from Power BI Desktop. In my environment, Power BI Desktop, Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable and operating system are all 64 bit.

Have you installed 32-bit Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable? Also is the access database file upgraded from lower version of Access to Access 2016? If so, please repair Access firstly and then install 32-bit Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable.

In addition, if you are on a 64 bit OS, you can consider to install the 64-bit Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable using the /passive switch at the command line, which is discussed in this similar blog, then use 64-bit Power BI Desktop to connect to the Access database.

Thanks,
Lydia Zhang

The links on that page - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/desktop-access-database-errors - show HTTP Error 400. The size of the request headers is too long.

Please check this troubleshooting article for more details regarding the cause and potential workarounds: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-desktop-access-database-errors/

Thank you... Step 3 was the solution i.e. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13255

I think the problem is that you can't open the Access database... 🙂

Seriously though, I imagine that the problem is that Power BI is looking for an older version of the Access database drivers. Check out this thread here:

I believe that the driver it is looking for was made for 2007 Office.
