Error 404 DataSource.Error: Web.Contents failed to get contents using Excel file from Sharepoint

Hi guys,

Yesterday i created a pbix file local in my desktop and used excel files as sources which located in our Sharepoint map location. During the load at the first time all the files were successfully imported in pbix file.

The chosen method for getting this files through my PBI file was:

  1. Get Data
  2. Web

Today i open the same pbix file and wanted to edit some querys in some tables but get the following message on every querys :

 2017-09-01 17_00_32-PBI_Storingen_EVnetNL (1) (1) - Query Editor.png

This are the files from our Sharepoint location:

2017-09-01 17_01_28-datasources - OneDrive.png

This is screenshot if i click on Go to Error from powerBI desktop

 2017-09-01 17_05_54-.png

This is the URL part from one of the using file :

https://easyconsultancy2.sharepoint.com/sites/VoorspellendsysteemmetbigdataEVnetNL/Shared%20Document...

So my wish is to edit querys but as you can see i am stuck with this error.  Any suggestions or solution?

 Many thanks,

R

In my case it was unsupported character in the path. There was "%" in the file name, like "MonthName%Year.xlsx". Just removed it and it works.

Maybe it will help anyone else 🙂

Hi all - I had this exact issue. The links would open fine, but PowerBI couldn't connect. And I got the 404 error.

Turned out the file name of one of the folders had changed, but it was such a small change I didn't notice it. So when I re-added the links, I suddenly noticed the file path was getting longer, and then realised what the error was! 😲

I hadn't noticed it because my Word doc. documentation had updated the link URL, but not the text of the URL, so when I copied it each time, I was copying the old URL, not the new one.

Hope that helps

I have the same problem! Is there any fix?

After 3 days, the Power BI cannot get the data anymore from an excel file in Sharepoint Folder.

"Web.Contents failed to get contents from "https<sharepoint site>" /$value' (404): Not Found"

Hi,

I have the same problem.

After 2 weeks I uploaded my Power BI into Power BI online and created the schedule refresh, but my power BI get an error. So, I try to refresh in Power BI desktop that connected with excel in Share point but I get the error  "Web.Contents failed to get contents from "https<sharepoint site>" /$value' (404): Not Found"

Even though my file still consists of the link.

and then I try to connect with the new file Power BI desktop, the source data success to connect.
Are you done with your problem? Please share how to solve it

@Eric_Zhang I'm having the exact same kind of issue for one specific file that I'm trying to connect to.

The file is located in OneDrive and I have no problem to access the file with same URL in for example a browser.

When changing from https to http I'm able to access the file but I really need to use https to be able to use a organizational account once the report is published to Power Bi Service.

I have tried to delete the file and upload it again to OneDrive but still get the same error.

I'm connecting to many other files using same method without issues but this specific file will not work!

Br,
Magnus

I have a similar issue. I used Web.Contents to get data from a Web Api. It works fine in Desktop, but when I publish it, I get prompted to authenticate, even though anonymous authentication should be supported. I get a 404 error even though the same query works fine in Desktop.

@Anonymous

Can you confirm that the excel still exists in that path in your sharepoint site? What is going on when you open that excel link in a web browser, I've got a 404 error in browser. If the files still exists in the sharepoint site, can you re-try to get data from that excel the way as the yesterday?
