I'm using directquery mode, from my understanding PowerBI isnt going to send a drop command to the DB but simply removes that field from the select query, is that correct?

Hi @Account123
That is correct. Power BI can't update, or delete your source data, so when you remove a column in the Query Editor or in Power BI it's just for Power BI. 🙂

As a result will the data in that column stops synchronizing, hence saving space?
