Does a custom connector code update require rebuilding dashboards and PBIX?

I have built a custom connector for a REST API-based online service provider. I created the M script, zipped it, renamed it to MEZ and put it under Documents\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors. I was able to use the connector inside Power BI desktop and publish dashboards and create PBIX.

Today I added some more code to my M script to bring in new objects. I followed the same procedure as above: created the MEZ file and replaced the extension file under Documents\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors.

My old dashboard does not load anymore. Do I need to recreate all my old visuals with this new connector and create a new dashboard now? I hope I don't need to do that every time I change my connector code. Can someone tell me a better way to handle this? Thx!

Hi @arunr78,

I haven't found any document mentioned how to update custom connector, so I think current it may not support auto update.

For your requirement, I think you need to re-publish your report after you update your connector.

BTW, I'd like to suggest save your original report as a template.
Every time you updated, you only need to open temporary file and modify datasource, then publish to replace old one.
