Documenting a dashboard

Hi,

I need to document some of the dashboards that i've created, including steps to recreate some of the visuals, the data model logic that was used and organization of the several pages.

Is there a template for these kinds of documents or does anyone know what sections should this document include? Also, are there tools that would make it easier to extract information from the dashboard. I already know about Tabular Editor in order to extract measures.

Thanks.

Hi @qmestu

You can refer to Microsoft Power BI documentation or some Power BI users' blogs or articles to get ideas about what sections should be included. Here are some examples for your reference:

Get started with Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Power BI Dashboard - Liquid Technologies (liqteq.com)

A Step-By-Step Guide To Creating A Power BI Dashboard - Acuity Training

A technical article or blog can usually contain the following sections:

  • Brief introduction about what this article is about. You can show what the dashboard is look like and what components it has. This could let readers have a target or expected output in their mind.
  • Content or outline of the following sections in the article
  • Descriptions about basic concepts that may appear in the article
  • Body: detailed steps on how to recreate some of the visuals, the data model logic that was used and organization of the several pages. Every section can have a structure of "What it is --> Why you design it like this --> How to achieve it".
  • Conclusion
  • Reference

It is similar to writing an essay. Sometimes you do not need to include all above sections in an article. Create a good and organized structure for the article. Make it easy for readers to find each section quickly.
