Do the Power BI Report Usage Metrics include query caching traffic?

Hi forum,

This question is for an environment using the premium workspaces. I have set up some Report Usage Metrics for various reports we have as described in the blog post below:
https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-improved-report-usage-metrics-in-modern-workspac...

I noticed that in the "Users - Report Opens" chart on the lower right, some of the results seem to come from the Power BI app caching data every 2-3 hours. One of the users we questioned said they did not access the app any day after the first recorded interaction. I was wondering if these reports indeed measure the mobile app caching report data and if so is there a way to exclude this and only show "real" user interactions?

Thank you,
Rob H.

Hi, @robertholcombe

It can take up to 24 hours for data to update. It's important to understand that differences can occur when comparing usage metrics and audit logs, and why. Audit logs are collected using data from the Power BI service, and usage metrics are collected on the client. Aggregate counts of activities in audit logs may not always match usage metrics.

Here are some considerations and limitations:

  • Usage metrics may sometimes undercount activities due to inconsistent network connections, ad blockers, or other issues that can disrupt sending the events from the client.
  • Certain types of views aren't included in usage metrics, as described earlier in this article.
  • Usage metrics may sometimes overcount activities, in situations where the client refreshes without the need for a request being sent back to the Power BI service.
  • Sharing is disabled for the usage metrics report. To give people read access to the report, you first need to give them access to the workspace.

For further information, please refer to the document .

Best Regards

Allan
