Display % Total and Total in same Bar Chart

Hi,

I'm sure there will be another post about this, but it's very hard to search for, as searches just come up with displaying only the % Total.

I am looking for a visual/functionality whereby I can display the total value as well as the % of total on the same Bar Chart, ideally with a secondary access. Much like it does on a Pie Chart and has both values, but everyone knows Pie Charts are rubbish... So wanting this functionality on a bar chart instead.

I know I can do this by using a Combo Bar and Line chart, but Lines do not display this data effectively.

Best solution I have for it so far is just creating two bar charts with exactly same set up one right below the other, and one showing total values, and other showing %. At a glance can quite easily see what you need, but would be great to make this one glance, not two.

Thanks,

Benji

Hi @benjikj_mcsp ,

I'm assuming that you only want to show the % as a data label correct? You do not need to have it visualy on the chart?

I would do what you refer creating a combo bar and line chart however with a few adjustments:

  • Make you line size to 0 this will give you no line on your chart
  • Add data labels for the line values
  • Make secondary axis values off
  • Make the top bottom values for the sexcondary axis in a way that you can place the % on a location you think is visible

In the example below there is a simple visualization with 3 categories and 3 values but can be adjusted to more:

percenta+total.png

So as you can see making small adjustments on the visualization data labels and Y-axis is possible to make a similar presentation.

Another option can be use a tooltip.

Yes, this worked pretty much perfectly. I was so nearly there with the Combo chart, and even did click down to reduce the line size, but didn't think it could go down to 0. So close!

Thank you!

Hi,

Looking to create a visual report in Power BI to compare the number of times people have picked a category. Due to the number of categories to compare(7) I have tried using the Bar Chart. The only issue is I want to display the data with the number of picks and the percentages of that pick as part as a total.

Is there a way I could do this in Bar chart?

I could do this in Pie chart but it seems like the bar chart could only allow you to do one or the other

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous ,

Can you share a sample data and expected result?

The result would look like the pic of the column chart already displayed above but in Bar Chart format. Also want the chart to display the number of people who have picked these choices.(Count)
