DirectQuery Report with automatic refresh

Hi all exports,

I have a report in DirectQuery mode and hosted in Power BI Service. Besides the "refresh" button in the Menu bar, is there any way to enable the report to refresh automatically every 5 mins? For example, to insert a client side JavaScript to trigger the browser to refresh? Thank you.

Re: DirectQuery Report with automatic refresh

Hi @mochabits

when configure refresh setting in power bi service, it is possible for automatically refresh or schdule refresh.

Refresh button in power bi desktop only supports manual refresh.

Regarding refresh power bi service, there are concerns:

If you are connecting using DirectQuery, everytime you click on something in your report, it is sending a query back to your Database in realtime and returning the results.

Your dashboards are automatically refreshed every 15 minutes, and there is the possibility to change this in the service.

(more than 15 minutes, like 30 minutes, 60..., instead of every 5 minutes)

Premium offers much more refresh times that is because it is in an isolated capacity.

if you want to clcik on a refresh button to make power bi report refresh outside the power bi, you could embed your power bi report in another app, and set up the refresh button, when clicking, it sends a request by calling Refresh dataset API to refresh one specific dataset.

Do note that the Data Refresh API shares the same limitation(8 times per day) with "Schedule Refresh" with a Pro license.

After exceeding the limitation, the API call would get the response saying "Number of refresh requests in last 24 hours exceeded limit".

If you'd like to lift this limitation, you may have to buy a premium license(48 times per day).
