Are there any written best practicies for effective reports / dashboards design?

I mean the Visual design best practicies for example:

- backgrounds for visuals

- where to position KPIs / slicers

- etc.

There are many attractive-looking dashboard samples out there (like this one:

but are there any writen guidelines?

Even if you don't know such guidelines but know some effective and good-looking dashboards and reports, please share links to those examples
