Creating hierarchies (dragging and dropping) stopped working for some bizarre reason

Ok I all I am trying to do is to drag and drop one column onto another to create a hierarchy and it isn't letting me do it. I get a circle with a line through it indicating it isn't possible

Anything up with the latest release or is it just me?

Hi @Steveyd78 ,

Please check your connection mode.

Based on my test, custom hierarchy is not available in live connection mode.

3.1.1.live.PNG

And no built-in date hierarchy when you use Direct Query mode.

Refer to : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-directquery-about#modeling-limitation...

There appears to be a better solution that @sjrrkb123 showed me.  They have moved this functionality to the Model tab.

Select your hierarchy and expand the Properties pane.

Thanks this worked for me, but make sure you click the Apply Level Changes once you have added and ordered your columns.

Ok so this has come back, when I try and drag and drop then I get a circle with a line through it. It isn't the connection type (am not a live connection). I just entered data into Power BI manually to try it. I disabled all of the preview features and uninstalled / installed - this is getting pretty frustrating!

Hi,

I'm no expect but i had this issue and found a work around that helped me.

Instead of using the drag drop method, i instead would right click the field i wanted and select "Create Hierarchy", and any additional field i wanted to add i would right click that and select "add to hierarchy"

Hope this helps,

Brett

Thanks Brett, this worked for me too!

Thanks, this worked for me!

I wan't in live connection mode so a restart fixed the problem BUT I didn't know that live connection impacts the behaviour so that is really good to know
