Creating Groups Hangs

I have a PBIX file that is pulling data from Salesforce objects (little under 400K records) that I am trying to create Groups on one of the fields.  I right clicked the field, selected New Group and defined my groups.  I have done this in the past with no problems; however, starting yesterday, after getting the groups defined and click OK to define the groups Power BI Desktop just hangs (get the "working on it" screen) and never comes back.  Looking at task manager, Power BI is getting very little to no CPU.

I applied some Windows updates yesterday and had not rebooted, yet so was thinking maybe.  Rebooted everything this morning and the first group that I was trying to defind yesterday worked great in about 2 seconds.  Now I'm trying to create a second group, same field with different grouping, and I'm back to hanging......even after a full reboot.

As anyone seen this before or can offer some help?  I have done some searching, but have not fond anything.

Thanks,

Craig

All,

I think I have figured it out.  I was adding single data points so that I could use the Other Checkbox option and did not want some data points to be automatically placed in "Other", but I did not want to group with other datapoints.  I was also trying to "relabel" some of these data points without changing to backend data, duplicating a column with a different header, etc.  After grouped all the items I wanted in Other by my own group name of other, leaving the single items to stay the way they were, it is working without issues.

@blindeye and @Anonymous, I am note sure if this is why you are also facing this issue, but so far everything is good as long as each group as at least two items.

I also have the same issue.  Nothing seems to help and it is very odd.  I try to group a few items.  It hangs.  I quit via Task Manager.  I go in and repeat the grouping and it is fine.

Restarts, reinstalls, updates and this keeps happening seemingly randomly.

Thinking of headed back to Tableau.

Check if you have auto-save enabled in your PBI options. After disabling it, my groups no longer hang.

Also same hanging issues... frustrating. Okay, Power BI is pretty cool, but there's way too much problems with it nowadays... crashes and bugs everywhere. FIX THIS PLZ

All of my groups have at least two items, however, I am still experiencing the same issue. I am not sure if this can be the solution to this problem.

Jamie,

I also found that I had to do it one group at a time, saving the work and then going back in.  I also found that if I added an item to a group, removed it and added it to another group within one "edit" session, it would hang.  I worked with Microsoft for over an hour and we never could get it to break while on Skype session with them; however, I think there are still so issues and they were going to be reviewing in lab.

Happened to me many times. Found that when editing groups, make sure that you do not have any other PBIX file open except the one you are working on. Was advised so by MS support. When applying this method I experience no crashes.

@CPaceFOTL,

I have been experiencing this same issue intermittently recently with groups as well on the latest release. I have roughly 600 unique values for one column that I want to group down to about 30 categories. I have roughly 1.3 million rows. Recently, after I try to create groups, the "Working on It" message shows up and nothing progresses even after trying to leave it alone for hours. I end up having to kill Power BI through task manager since the program is still locked and can't create the groups I want. Previously, I was able to create groups on the exact same set. Not sure why sometimes it works and sometimes it seems to just hang. I looked for some limitations on the maximum values of records for groups in the online documentation (https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-desktop-grouping-and-binning/), but didn't see any listed.

Also, looks like there is another post that might be related to this- https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Issues/Grouping-stuck-after-changes/idi-p/250097

Experiencing the same issue today, trying to sort 15k records into 8 groups. Power BI has now ben "working on it" for over 20 minutes.

@CPaceFOTL,

Instead, you could try to use nested IF Function or SWITCH Function to add a calculated column.
