Connecting to Access Database tables with 'Like' in the queries

I saw this come up a few years ago, and the resolution was basically a workaround to remove the 'Like' criteria from the query (not an option in my case), or connecting via ODBC. I don't fully understand connecting via ODBC, and was wondering if there was an actual fix on the way, or if not, if there was somewhere I could go to read more about connecting via ODBC?
