Change Size of a Column in a Column Visualization

Hello All - 

I'd like to control the size of the column bars in my visualization.  I'm not seeing a way to do this adequately.  The size of the bars are okay until I make a selection, they they are too big and cover the text which I have in the visual.  I've searched and can't find an answer as to how to control this.  I have attached to images to show you what's happening.

Can someone help?
