We are trying to start using Power BI Service to send out email subscriptions to dashboards. I am having an issue refreshing data in PBI Service when using import queries. I figure it is because once you published the file it can't refresh from that file again (not sure).
We have an On Prem Power BI Report Server that we have been using to publish dashboard for the company, but it has recently been brought up to have the ability to sent email subscriptions of dashboards.
We have an on prem gateway to connect to data in our SQL Server, but the refresh options do not seem to work unless using a direct query.
I was thinking maybe there was a way to connect to dashboards published on the report server and being refreshed there.
Any insight is welcome.

You should be able to refresh a dataset with data imported from SQL Server just fine through the data gateway. But the gateway administrator should enable access for you. This can be managed on a quite detailed level, so it may be that the queries you want to use are blocked, while direct query still works.
I got with my administrator and was able to get it refreshed properly. Thank you for the direction.
