Can't update data on powerbi.com

I have developed a Power BI model on the desktop app. I have published it, and are trying to update the data from powerbi.com.  When i picked data source, i selected the "Azure SQL database" source.

I have 2 questions:

1 Is it possible to connect to a Azure DB without an on premise gateway (from powerbi.com)? How? 🙂
2 If 1 is not possible: Do my computer have to be on at all times if i Install a gateway and go through it - if i want my data to be updated?

When i try to update the dataset on powerbi.com i get the following error message:

Refresh failed due to gateway configuration issues. This dataset requires a properly configured gateway in order to refresh.

If you're using personal mode, please make sure your gateway is online.

If you're using enterprise mode, please make sure you've added the following data sources in the Gateway Management Portal

SqlServer { server : "xx.xx.x.x" , database : "Prod" }

Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details. Show technical details

Hi @KristianS ,

The gateway is used to connect to on-premises datasource, the Azure SQL database is cloud database. When you connect to Azure SQL DB in the Desktop, you should just be able to publish the reports to the service and either schedule a refresh (if you imported) or it won't require a refresh if you used Direct Query, so I think you don't need to add gateway, you just to enter credential in it. You could refer to Data refresh in Power BI  for details.

In addition, because the gateway runs on the computer that you install it on, be sure to install it on a computer that's always turned on. If you're planning to use Windows authentication, make sure you install the gateway on a computer that's a member of the same Active Directory environment as the data sources. You could refer to Install an on-premises data gateway  for details.

Zoe Zhi
