[Calculated column based on number of characteres]

Hello everyone,

Suposing i have a colum "a" with data in format:

a	b	c
50007001	50007	001
880019001	880019	001

I want to create column b e c, i have 400.000 rows that varies in size, 8 or 9 characters. Is there a way to count the size to use the count in a "if" statment like --> IF( "8 CHARACTERS" ; LEFT(A;5);LEFT(A;6)). the "001" is not a problem since it will always be RIGHT(A;3).
