You probably already know that W.E.B. Du Bois was a sociologist, a historian and a community organizer. What you might not know is that he was also a pioneer of Data Visualization. At the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, Du Bois displayed almost 500 photos and 50 charts and graphs depicting the state of the Black life in America and the progress that had been made since slavery was abolished. The photos and charts were visceral proof that the reality of state of Blacks in America was far from what people expected.
For the 2019 Black Data Project Data Visualization Contest, entrants are challenged to redo, re-imagine and improve on one of the graphs presented at the World Fair. The rules are simple: Anyone can compete, Applicants can submit up to 3 submissions, Entries should be based one or more of the twelve charts selected, and Entries are due by 11:59pm EST on Febuary 28th.
