Azure Data Warehouse w/ DirectQuery

Hi,

I used PowerBI and ADW in Feb/Mar-16 for a project w/ DirectQuery and performance was quite poor.. this was for a number of reasons including data granularity, contention on the db, the fact ADW was still preview etc. etc.

I have heard anecdotaly (sp?) that it is much better now, although do not have a way of proving checking beyond spinning an AdventureWorks ADW instance and connecting up to it.

Can anyone offer any real word experience working with these two services almost 1 year on from when i last attempted.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi @cjmthompson,

I don’t know anecdotaly, about its issues, please post the question in anecdotaly forum to get better support.

Additionally, to improve performance after connecting to Azure Data Warehouse through DirectQuery in Power BI Desktop, I would recommend you review the following articles to optimize Azure data warehouse design.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-data-warehouse/sql-data-warehouse-best-practices
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-data-warehouse/sql-data-warehouse-tables-statistics

Thanks,

@v-yuezhe-msft, i don't mean to be rude, but are you taking the piss w/ the first sentence?

To be clear, I am saying that people have told me that PowerBI working with ADW like-for-like is vastly improved now.

Anyway.. my ADW design is well optimised and I have been working with the product for almost a year now, and we get good results from it, the issues that were faced previously were due to poor query construction from PowerBI.. i don't need anecodtes for this, i know what the behaviour was at the time.

If you are not aware of the specifics of any optimisations that Power BI working with ADW has had, that's fine... but an answer to that question, from people that use these products together is what I'm after.

Ty,

Chris.
