Advice on branching out from beginner to intermediate PBI content creator

Hey all,

I am slowly becoming more and more confident in PBI, laregly thanks to the great community here helping me add knowledge to me repetoire!

My next question is a bit of advice from perhaps some full time data analytic types... I am starting to really get the hang of DAX (fairly easy to pick up!) does anyone have any advice on things I should learn next to push/suppliment my skills using Power BI?

Should I learn a language like SQL? or whats next on this journey?

At the moment my skillset is confined to using PBI desktop... uploading to a premium backed cloud and then sharing the apps... and manually using power query with xls files to get data into my reports.

Cheers,

J

Hi @Anonymous

Python is the ultimate thing you would want to learn for Power Bi. It opens a numerous possibility.

Python is one of the many sources that can feed data to the streaming dataset(My 1st point)

'R' is another one but Python is highly shought for.

You might have noticed the below python logo on visualizations pane.

For Direct query , you need some DB connections(SQL server is one)

Hi @Anonymous

Below is the things I did for learning

  • Work on a streaming dataset whch automatically refreshed data every second or minute or on demad. No schedule refresh used.
  • Use direct query
  • Learn Tabular Editor
  • Finally Python is very much recommended

This should keep you rolling for quite some time.

Did I suggest you somethng useful? Mark my post as a solution!

@pranit828

Hey thanks for that!

I am assuming the first 2 I would need access to an SQL server? Could I simulate one locally with MySQL?

curious as to why python? What does it allow me to do?

cheers
