Accessing Data From Home

Hi all,

I am trying to create DirectQueries from home.

Is it possible to use PowerBi Desktop from my home to access data at work, through a data gateway that is living on a server at work?

Am I able to access the data supplied to the PowerBi Gateway at work, from home? I have installed PowerBi Desktop and I am trying to run queries. But I get the following error:" 

Microsoft SQL: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection...

This happens only when I am not at work. How can I work from home using data from work?

@CadMachine , because from your home you are not able to access the database. You need to work with your IT to get that.

You can also explore the option of using SQL server express edition as you dev database

@CadMachine , Direct query means you need to have access to the database that can be using VPN or IP whitelisting etc. Gateway is used to supply data to Power BI service
