Report is also available in Actual View here
All data is available at the US Energy Information Administration’s website https://www.eia.gov/
Specifically - Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update page - https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/
1) Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Prices can be found at:
https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/xls/pswrgvwall.xls
https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/xls/psw18vwall.xls
Fuel Prices include ALL Taxes and are updated WEEKLY!
2) Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Pump Components History
https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/gaspump_hist.php
https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/dieselpump_hist.php
Fuel Pump Components are calculated MONTHLY!
Therefore, they can lag by up to 2 months (sometimes 3)
Please note that many of the percentages in the source data do not add up to exactly 100%!!!
https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/pump_methodology.php
3) Federal and State Motor Fuel Taxes
https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/marketing/monthly/xls/fueltaxes.xls
I believe the EIA updates this file twice a year.
Consequently, detailed tax data can lag by 6 months or more.
Please note that LOCAL Taxes are not included in the calculation of the State Totals!
Local Taxes are listed for some states in the Notes (e.g. Hawaii)
Number of Visuals Per Page
Please keep in mind that this report was started as a test file and it was never my intention to publish it!
I was experimenting, trying out various visuals and techniques and just generally testing out new things.
Consequently, my focus was always on the visual output and in many cases this happens at the expense of performance.
Obviously, I’ve used many more visuals per page than I would advise anyone to use on a single page.
Visual Titles
All Visual Titles have not only been turned off but all also changed to black font and black background and then turned back off.
You will however notice few visuals still displaying their titles in the default format during the initial loading of each page.
This seems to affect some (not all) of the visuals that had to be renamed and both default and custom.
Visual Interactions
Some Visual Interactions have been disabled on purpose!
Here’s just one example. (Gasoline vs Diesel Page)
A Line and Stacked Column chart (Ch1) cannot highlight an Area Chart (Ch2) but only Filter!
When you have 24 years of data and click on Ch1 you don’t want Ch2 underneath to filter but rather highlight!
A Line and Stacked Column chart (Ch1) can highlight a Clustered Column Chart (Ch3).
Use the button above the top right corner of Ch2 to switch to Ch3 and see the desired result!
I’ve kept both options hoping this interaction will one day be available.
Fuel Pump Components Percentages
Yes! Many of these do not add up to exactly 100% as mention above. See Source data 2).
Since this was just a test file I made the decision not to make any adjustments at the time.
However, I may address this in the future now that the report is published here!
Sync Slicers
Slicers have not been synced by design!
Gallon/Liter Calculation
1 US Gallon = 3.78541 Liters
This looks great, I was wondering if you could share the file. I wanted to see how you create some of the visuals. Thanks again.
@Anonymous
Thank you! Unfortunately, I won't be able to share the pbix file.
However, if you have a specific question I would be happy to answer and explain
I'll be posting a guide on how to use the Gasoline vs Diesel page soon.
(In fact I plan to do this for all pages eventually)
Hi Sean, did you post anything else with reference to this Power BI? Are you using the API from EIA to get the data? I too am very interested in the PBIX but I do appreciate the level of effort it probably took to get this together.
Stephen
Hi Stephen, indeed it took sometime to put this together and many of the features available in PBI today were not available back then.
I stopped updating this report when there was an Issue with the Card with States custom visual I believe it was March or April 2020.
But now thanks your message I took another look and this report will once again refresh every week - its all web queries and xls files from the EIA's website.
As I stopped working on this report I started working on a Covid-19 dashboard only for Oklahoma.
You can view it here => https://ok-covid-19.com
I hope you like that dashboard as well 😀
No worries...thanks for getting back to me and I can't wait to see the guides.
