I wanted to create an interactive map of the New York State Senate that had geographic meaning. A map of the actual senate districts is not effective because the districts in New York City are so small they are barely visible on the map. A map of the seating chart of the Senate chamber lacks geographic significance.
So I created this tile map based as closely as possible on the actual locations of the districts, though it takes some imagination.
I used a scatter chart with square shaped markers to create the map. I created a simple table for the x-axis and y-axis of each district:
I used the Enlighten legend for the color key, and multi-row cards for the district information.
