One of the most important challenges of a 3PL logistics service provider is to minimize the empty kilometers between his jobs.
Where do I get my truck empty and where do I find a connecting return freight? That is the question that the transport planner asks himself several times a day while creating his transport planning.
But the transport company must also ask itself the same questions on a strategic level. In which region do I look for extra return customers, taking into account my current freight traffic. Or the other way around: to which destinations do I need extra cargo in function of my return shipments.
To support this thinking exercise, we created this Power BI example case at TLCC in which we make a visual representation of the regions in which the most empty mileage occurs and the top X traffics that generate them.
The example below is based on a transport company with export to and return from France. We created it using the planning data from the TMS software.
If you click on the "export load based" button, you will see the Top 20 export traffic that generates the most empty kilometers with a map visual next to it.
If you click on the "return load based" button, you will see the same data but based on the loading places of the return loads.
Power BI for Logistics is a realization of TLCC (www.tlcc.be). With this project we want to inspire our customers in the logistics sector in terms of data analysis and reporting.
