Known for his award-winning global achievements in infographics and multimedia as a professor, author, journalist, and designer, Alberto Cairo serves as the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the School of Communication at the University of Miami (UM). He is also the director of the Visualization Program of UM’s Center for Computational Science. Praised for his ability to explain in clear terms how to work with data, discover the stories hidden within, and share those stories with the world, Alberto transforms elementary principles of data and scientific reasoning into tools that can be used in daily life. When Alberto is not in the classroom helping his students explore and understand data, he’s busy authoring books, such as Infografía 2.0: Visualización interactiva de información en prensa (Alamut, Spain, 2008), The Functional Art: An Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization (2012), and The Truthful Art: Data, Charts, and Maps for Communication (2016), to serve as resources to those wanting to learn more about data visualization. Over the past two decades, Alberto has been director of infographics and visualization at news organizations in Spain and Brazil, in addition to consulting with companies and educational institutions in more than 20 countries.
