DAX help on text only table

Hi all, I'm new to Power BI and still trying to navigate my way around the app.

I want to create a Dashboard to show the status of testing, i only have text and date in my table and when i drag the column to the report, all i see is data. I know i need to create a measure which will get me started to virtualize my data.

Columns headers in my table - Defects No, App Name, App Description, Date, Status

First of all, i need to know how to get the total Number of defects? I have used the Sum function for "defects No" column but the number is wrong as this is just a number for each defects logged.

How do i go about doing this? I appreciate the help. Thanks

Re: DAX help on text only table

Hi @omooba ,

Try COUNTROWS(YourTableName). May I also suggest you get the book, Supercharge Power BI by @MattAllington  or something similar to get you started?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: DAX help on text only table

Hi @omooba ,

Here is an a blog about dealing with blanks that you might enjoy.blank in dax There is also count, counta, countax.

The COUNTX function takes two arguments. The first argument must always be a table, or any expression that returns a table. The second argument is the column or expression that is searched by COUNTX.

The COUNTX function counts only values, dates, or strings. If the function finds no rows to count, it returns a blank.

If you want to count logical values, use the COUNTAX function.

Re: DAX help on text only table

Thanks for your help, that did work but its worth pointing out that it will also count "null" rows.

But it worked. appreciate.
