Is Microsoft responsible for the external visuals in its library?

Dear team,

there are plenty of visuals in the Power BI library (https://appsource.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/apps?product=power-bi-visuals&page=1&src=office&co...

However, I doubt I will "sell" any of these visuals on my Power BI dashboards because I do not know what happens if external developers stop giving their support like OKViz or WeiWei.

Their visuals look great but in the end I have to justify why an important dashboard is no more working after 6 months in front of the top management. I know once a server API is marked as depreciated it is completely removed after some cycles.

Could you tell me what happens to these visuals if they are no more working with the latest release of Power BI Report server (on-premise)?

best regards and thanks,

Sebastian

Most likely thier visuals don't work in Power BI Report Server (RS) since they use newer API than RS supports.

We would recommend that you should ask external developers to send you private build of visual that supports RS.

Microsoft is currently considering an update for RS that will resolve such issue for all of custom visuals.

Dear Ignat,

many thanks again for your answer! Sure, I understand that sometimes you have to switch APIs but honestly do you think I can include private builds of external developers on a strategic BI roadmap in our company?

I am happy to hear there is an upcoming new RS release since the community is really keen to hear about it and some open questions exist for the upcoming release.

best regards and thanks again,

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I think you might rely on private build so far while Report Server is in process of upgrading.

Once Report Server is updated and released you will be able to switch back to public versions of extenal custom visuals.
