Working With Financial Years In Power BI

by EnterpriseDNA Regular Visitor Thursday - last edited Thursday

In today's post, I wanted to cover a few examples of how you can incorporate financial years into your Power BI models and reports. Sometimes, your date tables won’t have the custom financial years that you require for your analysis. Not only could it be financial years but you might also need to bring into filters your financial quarters.

Financial Reporting Tips For Power BI

by EnterpriseDNA Regular Visitor on ‎10-04-2018 04:55 AM - last edited on ‎10-08-2018 06:33 AM by Administrator await

In this post I wanted to go into a few financial reporting tips you can utilize inside Power BI. Many of you who have been using Power BI since it was re-released a few years ago know that financial reporting inside of the tables we were given has been relatively difficult.

Developing with Power BI Embedding (Part 1)

by TedPattison on ‎09-30-2018 07:44 PM - last edited on ‎10-01-2018 02:37 PM by Administrator await

Power BI provides developers with Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) capabilities which make it possible to embed Power BI resources into custom applications. By learning to use a set of APIs created by the Power BI team at Microsoft, a developer can embed Power BI reports, dashboards and dashboard tiles into custom web applications that target the browsers, tablets and mobile devices.

Best Practices For Power BI Desktop Development

by EnterpriseDNA Regular Visitor ‎09-20-2018 05:37 PM - edited ‎09-20-2018 05:39 PM

In this post, I want to dive into some of my best practices for Power BI Desktop development. I think bringing all these ideas together will give you a very good understanding of how I like to approach all Power BI reporting and analysis that I complete myself.

A requirement that we face very often in our projects is to be able to easily re-use multiple measures particularly when dealing with similar data models on a standard data source like for example cloud-based accounting systems like Dynamics, Xero, QuickBooks etc.

Today, I want to touch on a really fascinating topic inside of Power BI. I call this one virtual tables. If you can start understanding how to incorporate virtual tables inside your DAX functions, you will quickly see the opportunities to extend your analysis even further.

How to realize dynamic financial statements with calculated subtotals

by karaoan ‎08-28-2018 04:56 PM - edited ‎08-28-2018 04:57 PM

As I see lots of ongoing questions and misinformed comments (“Power BI can’t be used for financial statements”). Here I will cover a simple approach how you can realize financial statements with dynamically calculated subtotals like profit and loss (P/L), balance sheet, cash flow etc.

Establish a multiform data production and communication strategy

by MirandaLi Frequent Visitor on ‎08-21-2018 02:54 PM - last edited on ‎08-21-2018 03:43 PM by MindyJ Frequent Visitor

For many of us who work in data analytics for long time, you may notice that producing great data reports and dashboards alone doesn’t always generate desired outcomes. Why? Because data reports and dashboards are usually exploratory by nature and self-service oriented. In addition, they usually don’t have rich text to explain why certain charts and data points are meaningful in what context, not mentioning the usual lack of graphical elements that make data fun and interesting to read.

Switching Dimensions Based on Slicer Selection

by ThirdI Frequent Visitor on ‎05-16-2018 04:49 AM - last edited on ‎05-22-2018 10:00 AM by MindyJ Frequent Visitor

I recently came across a customer who was looking for a way to switch the dimensions dynamically using a slicer.  In this blog, I’ll be sharing how I could do it in Power BI. This can be understood using the following example:

Switch from Excel & PowerPoint to next-Gen dataviz (for Beginners)

by augustindelaf Member ‎03-22-2018 12:33 PM - edited ‎03-22-2018 12:33 PM

The purpose of the following article is to help people who would like to create simple dashboards for their Excel data, and to show them how easy it is.

Let's start with a very common issue we all faced once.  You have (a lot of) data in your Excel file, and until now you always built your reports with Excel charts and PowerPoint. But you have seen some Power BI reports, and you would love to be able to create some beautiful reports too.

Fun with Graphing in Power BI - Part 3i

by Super User on ‎02-26-2018 10:08 PM - last edited on ‎05-22-2018 09:09 AM by MindyJ Frequent Visitor

Perhaps you thought there were no more fun graphing topics with Power BI after Part 1 and Part SQRT(4). Well, you would be wrong. You see, because they hate you, mathematicians treacherously strive to invent new ways to confound and befuddle actual human beings nearly every day. In 1975, one particularly vicious mathematician, Benoit B Mandelbrot used hundreds of years of research to create perhaps one of the most devious, spiteful and sadistic mathematical constructs...the fractal.

Fun with Graphing in Power BI - Part 1

by Super User on ‎02-14-2018 12:59 PM - last edited on ‎05-22-2018 09:08 AM by MindyJ Frequent Visitor

I am always interested in pushing the limits of Power BI and, as my recent entry into the 2017 Year in Review Contest demonstrates, I do not feel that working with Power BI always has to be...well...entirely serious. So, let's have some fun with Power BI and push the envelope a bit by tackling some problems that one might traditionally utilize a program like Mathematica to solve.

Runge-Kutta and the Limits of DAX

by Super User on ‎02-13-2018 11:30 AM

My recent foray into solving complex numerical/engineering problems with DAX such as Kaplan-Meier Survival Curves and Linear Interpolation led me to wonder what other kinds of problems I might be able to solve using Power BI and DAX. This inquiry led me to remember one of my favorite engineering classes taught by Dr. Michael J. Rider at Ohio Northern University (ONU), Numerical Methods, and one of my favorite numerical method techniques, Runge-Kutta.

Joining tables In Power BI using Power Query and/or DAX

by ruthpozuelo on ‎02-06-2018 09:54 AM - last edited on ‎02-06-2018 09:57 AM by MindyJ Frequent Visitor

I have done a few videos on YouTube explaining how to join tables using Power Query or DAX. If you follow the channel, you probably have seen the videos and this blog post will serve as a compilation of all the material.

However, if you are new, this will serve as a tutorial for beginners on how to joins in Power BI. Either way, I believe this post will be useful for all, so let's get started.
