Understanding of Report Server Datasets

I rarely deal with Report Server but now have someone that uses it.  It is my understanding that you cannot "Get Data" from a dataset on the Report Server.  Is that correct?  If yes, I would assume then that each report needs to have the data actually in the PBIX file before you save it to the Report Server.  If yes, is that not rather inefficient?  Or does Direct Query work so well on Report Server do people do just that?  Just curious how you all operate out there.  Thanks...........

Hi @DPCCGF ,

Normally If you want to create Dataset for several Reports you can create a SSAS (it is like a Dataset in Power BI Cloud). And to this Dataset you can use Live Connection. And of course you can use a Direct Query in Report Server as well to a SQL DB for example 🙂 But be aware of limitations in the Data Sources and that you need some drivers for some Sources 😉 like ODBC.

Best,

Kathrin
