Power Bi On-Premises Gateway: Security and Performance

Hello members,

I am pretty new to PowerBI and am about to install a On-Premises Gateway on our production DataWarehouse Server. I just wanted to figure out if there are any security and/or performance implications on the production server that I should be aware of?

If so, any work-arounds would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all

Hi @bhawesh003

The On-Premise gateway can actually impact the performance of our Data Warehouse Server. It all depends in terms of what the load will be when refreshing data from the Power BI Service.

If you have data refreshes that does a lot of transformations in the Query Editor, this will potentially use significant CPU & Memory on the server where the On-Premise Gateway is installed. Also potentially is the amount of users refreshing or using DirectQuery.

It is one of those scenrio's where it all depends on how you are connecting your data, how many users, and how often the data is being accessed or refreshed.

I would look at all of the above, as this could have a larger impact on your Server.

You can read my blog post below, where I show how it all works, as well as what will affect performance. There is also a link to Kasper De Jonge's post where he goes into detail.

Hi @bhawesh003,

According to my knowledge, installing gateway doesn’t impact the performance of your server. Just make sure that you meet the requirements described in this article to install gateway, and you add required ports and whitelist the IP addresses stated in above article in your firewall.

Thanks,
