How to disassociate with a Personal Gateway

Here is story about Gerald:

Gerald was an early adopter of PowerBI at his organisation. He installed the Personal Gateway on his laptop about a year ago to demonstrate how data and files could be integrated into PowerBI Service. Things were great.

Months later, the organisation installed an Enterprise Gateway which made life even betterer.

Gerald's laptop got replaced with a shiny new Windows10 machine, so the Personal Gateway went offline. The PowerBI Service keeps reminding Gerald that his Personal Gateway is offline whenever he wanted to configure datasets to refresh.

Gerald can't uninstall the Personal Gateway and he doesn't want to install another one.

He spent ages searching through the community to find a solution, but found only confusing and outdated information.

He is getting pretty frustrated by the effort he has to go to get support and the undocumented agony that the MS developers are subjecting him to.

Hi @Anonymous,

So far we just ignore that odd gateway connection and you could ask him follow up topic for new updating https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Service/How-to-remove-personal-gateway-from-app-powerbi-com/td-p/7252/page/2

Hi @tringuyenminh92,

I asked Gerald to check that link - eventually he found the issue.

Wow - this has been active issue since SEPTEMBER 2015!!

I am experiencing the same problem.  I have removed the personal gateway and install enterprise gateway.  The connection has tested successfully.  But when I tried to refresh the dataset, it is saying the personal gateway is offline.  And it it not using the enterprise gateway.  Please advise how we can refresh using the new gateway.

I am having the same issue.  Anyone know of a fix for this?

Hi there,

No - this continues to be an issue for everyone.

The most frequently posted "fix" that people from the community are suggesting is to reinstall the personal gateway.

However - that is NOT a fix, as many corporate environments will not allow this to be installed.

Same issue, without solution after many weeks

@perpor

As far as I know, the product team are planning to add the option to delete the personal gateway, so the user won't see it in the UI even after they've uninstalled it. But there is no specific timetable yet.

Best Regards,
Herbert

When Gerald tries to "Manage Gateways" in the PowerBI Service, he is told "You don't have any data gateways".

Gerald thinks this is odd, and no, he doesn't want to download and install another local gateway.

He checks the 'schedule refresh' section for one of the datasets that he manages:Capture.PNG

The 'Offline' personal gateway shows the PC number for Gerald's old laptop.

Gerald didn't install the Enterprise Gateway, he doesn't want to know where it is running - he just loves the fact that when he publishes something from PowerBI Desktop to the Service, it just works.

Adding to his confusion, if Gerald clicks the 'Manage Gateways' link in that screen, he is told that he doesn't have any gateways installed - which isn't correct.

@Anonymous

Gerald can install the Personal Gateway on his new Win10 machine. Once the status is “Connected: You’re good to go!” in the Personal Gateway, he should be able to see it when try to configure dataset to refresh after sign in to PBI Service on his new Win10 machine. The gateway state should be online, running on “new Win10 machine”. He does not need to take any action to the old one in the old machine.

The “Manage Gateways” page is for on-premises gateway. If he wants to use this instead, he needs to install on-premises gateway and add data source for it.

Best Regards,

Herbert

Unfortunately Gerald cant't do that because after IT installed the Enterprise Gateway, they no longer allow users to install the Gateway citing security risks, and they argue that the Enterprise Gateway allows more control of what is published.

Hi @Anonymous,

He just signs in with Enterprise gateway in local(after installation) and in power bi Service. In Manage gateways, there will be one more gateway option, so he could use the new one.
