Change reorder z-order of visuals in web services

Problem

  • When visuals overlap, we want some visuals to go behind and others to come in front when overlapping. PBI Desktop allows this but there was no obvious way to change this order in the web service.

(Digressing a bit to qualify the problem and highlight a bigger usability issue for which looking for a solution)

  • It is required in web services for different reasons but the most important of them is when an existing report is duplicated by doing a "save as", it gets disconnected from the original PBIX file and any changes in the original report do not reflect in the report created using "save as" in web interface.

  • If the forked report set has been tweeked in the web service, the only way to do things to the report which require PBI Desktop, is to download a PBIX of the report and make changes there. But the moment it is published back to the workspace, it creates a bigger problem by forking the dataset too and now we have another dataset which is not is sync with the original dataset and poses a bigger problem as the original dataset evolves.

Solution

To handle z-order of overlapping visuals in the web service (in the browser), click on "View" menu option and toggle-on the "Selection Pane" which starts showing the pane on the right with all the visuals which can then be ordered by dragging them up and down or hidden by clicking on the "eye" icon on the right.

Hope this helps someone who is stuck due to inability to modify the z-order of overlapping visuals in the web service (browser interface).

If someone has a solution or workaround or approach for handling the other two issues highlighted in the problem section above, I would be glad to hear.
