Connecting to external SharePoint behind Web Application Proxy

Hi,

We are trying to access a SharePoint site to read list data in Power BI.

The SharePoint site is external, and is behind a Web Application Proxy server using AD FS.

When we try to login using an organizational account (or Microsoft Account) we get the following error.

"We were unable to connect because the credential type isn't supported for this resource. Please choose another credential type."

When connecting to the SharePoint site from the internal network, everything works fine.

Do we need to setup anything specific on the Web Application Proxy side?

Kind regards

Thijs

Hi @thijsdeschepper,

From your description, it seems that you get data from on-premise SharePoint site, right?

Please go to the machine which has Power BI desktop installed, check if you can access the SharePoint site successfully in browser. If it does, then in Power BI desktop, choose SharePoint list data source and type the site root URL, use Windows credential to access data.

Best Regards,

Yes, data is being gathered from an on premises SharePoint.

The SharePoint is however protected via a Web Application Proxy server.

When browsing to the SharePoint site, the user is redirected to a login page. After login, the user can browse the SharePoint site without any issues.

When we use Windows Credentials in Power BI, we get the following error.

Details: "OData: The given URL neither points to an OData service or a feed: 'https://<adfs url>/adfs/ls?version=1.0&action=signin&realm=urn:AppProxy:com&appRealm=e7cfb372-80e0-e611-80ec-00505601017f&returnUrl=https://<sharepoint url>/_vti_bin/ListData.svc&client-request-id=076C33CD-63DD-0001-C844-9408DD63D301'."

When we use the option Organization Account, we get the following error.

We were unable to connect because this credential type isn't supported for this resource.

Kind regards
