Stop using SSAS?

Hi Guys

we are doing some changes to our BI architecture and are thinking if we should stop making cubes(tabular) like we have been doing now that we have power bi.

we have some data warehouses and cubes on them and other data sources and have been using SSRS and excel and are adding Power bi as another option for our users.

and since you can do alot of what we used to do in the cube in power bi

we wondering if there is still a need to have tabular cubes in the mix

any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hey,

you won't receive a clear answer.

It depends on many things, but both SSAS tabular and PowerBi are using Vertipaq Engine.

Also you have SSRS in use, so maybe it is better to go on with SSAS Tabular to have only one Datasource for all reporting platforms, because more tools can directly connect to Server Base Tabular, but not if it is nested in PowerBI.

If you are using other frontends and you have the demand for some kind of single point of truth etc you should go on with SQL Server. With a live connection you dont have extra effort using SSAS Tabular in PowerBI.

Also it is important if you have an IT Centric BI/BI Competancy Center or a more dynamic, self service oriented way for creating the Data for reporting and how you projects are organized.

So you have to consider these (and more) points in you decision, but for my Opinion there is no "the only and right way".

Hope it helps you a bit.

Greetings.

Hi @birgirs,

Power BI get data from different data sources, then visualize these data in different visuals. Though Power BI provide some data modeling features, it can't act as a role with SSAS totally. Just like @WolfBiber mentioned, other BI tools need to connect to SSAS as well.
