Importing data from SCADA gateway

Hi,

I'm working with a client in the Energy industry who uses SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) to gather data in real time from remote locations to control equipment. He downloads the necessary data from a web interface( which looks up the data from the SCADA gateway) and analyses it in Excel using pivot tables. He doesn't have access to the SCADA gateway itself. I told him about how Power BI can be used to view the data interactively and seamlessly whilst establishing a connection to the SCADA gateway. So I was just wondering if anyone here knows if Power BI can be used to extract data from the SCADA gateway ?

Hi @Capstone,

To my knowledge, we are not able to directly connect to SCADA gateway and import data from there.

In your scenario, try to use “Get Data->Web”  option in Power BI Desktop, enter Web URL and check if you can get any data. In addition, if your system has OData feeds available or database behind it, it is possible to connect straight to the OData feeds or the database from Power BI Desktop.

Thanks,

Hello,

I tried connecting to a SCADA gateway via odbc, i was able to connect and see all the tables.  But i'm getting error previewing/loading most of the tables. What could be the source of the problem? I was able to load those tables with few rows in it.

Any help/input is appreciated.:)

Hi @Capstone,

did you checked the direct connection of PowerBi to SCADA already?

What was the result of it? is it possible?

Unfortunately I didnt find a way to connect directly to SCADA.

Hi,

I have worked with SCADA system and gateway for some years, and I think your client is exporting to csv or xls, it common to any SCADA. this way power bi could not be the best tool.
But in another hand, your client should comunicate his SCADA Gateway with SQL Data Base, could be a free edtion, therefore you can use power bi to extract relevant informations.

Thanks Paulino, I will certainly discuss this with the client.
