Create Report based on Data Gateway

Hi, I have my data gateway set up and successful connects to the Oracle database.

I am in PowerBI web version, how do I create a report using the direct query option ?

I thought once I had the data gateway up and running and a data source added I would be able to create dataasets from the data source.

Hi @dduffy,

Agree with eskyline. In Power BI Desktop,  you have the "DirectQuery" option to connect to Oracle database, for more details, please review the following article.

great thanks I was hoping that I could just use the powerbi service rather than have to use the desktop version, because I am a mac user, so i have to run VMs to get the desktop version to work. So if the gateway worked direct from the powerbi service that would have been great. but i will give the desktop version a go

Hey dduffy,

I'm pretty sure the only options for connecting to on-prem data when in the Power BI Service/web version is the Microsoft Analysis Services (SSAS) cube option.  If you did (and you don't since you are using Oracle) have some SSAS connections defined in the gateway they would appear if you chose that option in Get Data.  When working with SSAS cubes most often you use the Direct Query model so in that case it doesn't really make sense to do imports.

I'm guessing some day they add the feature of connecting to relational databases with connections defined in the gateway to the Power BI Service/web but for now your only real option is to create the report in the Power BI Desktop the publish it to the Power BI Service.  If the server name and database names match it should like up when you publish and connect to your gateway connection.  You can always check that under the Dataset ... option in the Power BI Service once your report is published.  My experience is all with SQL Server databases but I'd guess the Oracle databases and connections would act the same.
