Unable to open document; we weren't able to restore saved database to the model

Hello,

I have just installed the Feb 2018 update for Power Bi and i am no longer able to open any .pbix files. I recieve the message;

Unable to open document; we weren't able to restore saved database to the model

I have followed some previous blogs of uninstalling/reinstalling, and the error still remains. Can anyone help please?

Indeed Version 2.55.5010.581 (2/7/2018) seems to have fixed this Smiley Happy

@AlexGorevThanks!

Issue has been marked as solved here

@v-xjiin-msft same for me.  And thanks - removing the '&' from the folder name fixed it.

I imagine for people where the '&' is at a much higher level in the folder structure, this would be a real pain...seemingly if there's an '&' anywhere in the file path, the issue crops up.

Yep indeed the folder had an "&"

The File in question was pinned in the Desktop on the start up sceeen and you don't see the complete path there...

EDIT: The complete path actually does show up as a Tooltip Smiley Wink

The other 2 pinned were in other folders and that's why they were opening!

Regardless they should fix this - there's whole industry that uses - O&G - in file names and folders etc...

But thanks for pointing this out @mmace1 Smiley Happy

Folks consider the consequences before rushing to rename the folder!

You may be better off moving the PBIX file to a temporary folder until they fix this...

Renaming the folder is causing problems for other files and programs - as they also have to be redirected

Wow

My '.pbix' file doesn't have a "&" symbol, guess the problem isn't with the file name then.

However when I moved the file from my OneDrive folder into the Desktop folder, I could open the file.

Very strange issue, hopefully Microsoft will fix this issue urgently.

@RolandC

The issue is with the file path.

So say:

S:\Operations\Reports & Datasets\Jimmy Boy\Recent Docs\My File.pbix

^ That would have the issue, until you moved it somewhere that doesn't have an ampersand in the file path.

Your desktop doesn't have a file path with an ampersand in it apparently.

And then yeah, .pbix files with an ampersand in the title, presumably just woudln't open no matter what.

Thank you @mmace1!

I had read all the posts and thought 'Why are my files affected, I don't have any special characters in their names....' and then when I read you wrote, I realized that everything is saved within a 'Data & dashboards' folder. Whoops.

Here's hoping there's a fix soon, or else I'm gonna do some wholesale shifting.

Same issue (unable to open my pbix file) after updating powerb. I can open it only if I move the pbix file from OneDrive (i save it here to open it on different computers) to my desktop. The database can be updated without change data origins and published online. I hope to move back my files back to onedrive as soon as possible.

@rjg2g11

Honestly, I have no idea. But if I got any feed back or information. I'll come back and tell you.

Thanks,
Xi Jin.
