Images/binary in Power BI Desktop ?

I have made a simple data model with a query joining 2 tables from a SQL Server. The first table holds countries and the other holds an image for each country. But the image column is NOT present when I try to use it in a report and it is not present in my dataset. It is present in "Power Query" and the datatype is binary. Is Power BI Desktop NOT supporting images/binary. Hopefully this is a festure which will be available very soon. Seems by the way that the Power BI service cannot visualize images either.

This article states that images are supported in SSAS MD (https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-desktop-ssas-multidimensional/). I have added url to the cube and only link is displayed. How can I make it work in PowerBI?

And me yet again. This works just fine. On MD Cube we need to setup attribute type as imgurl. Then PowerBI can display pictures from SSAS MD!

Hello @MateuszBI,

did you provide some publish image links like "http://some-image.jpg" and marked those as data type IMGURL, or did you provide some local-stored image links like "C:\some-image.jpg" and marked those with data type IMGURL which Power BI was able to successfully show you?

Could you please make your solution more clear? Thanks!

I am attaching my concerns to that question. My client have SSAS MD model. In that case even given workaround does not work. Is there images support for SSAS MD comming?

Have anyone been able to sorted this out? I am trying to display images from a SQL Table where images are stored as binary. When I bring the data in to my data model, I can see the field with the data, when trying to select it from the report section, it is not available. I tried the option of combining ... but not sure how it works ...

Thanks,

I have not succeded in Power BI, yet. I did display the images (binary bmp in SQL tables) in Reporting Services and I am not a similar trick works in Power BI. I have not tried it yet.

Try this for some sort of workaround/sollution: https://blog.gbrueckl.at/2018/01/storing-images-powerbi-analysis-services-data-models/

Not working for Card Browser Visual though.

@Anonymous This capability has been added in the latest release.

I am not seeing images URL as an option for formating a field in PowerBI is it still in the latest relase version?

Hi,

Actually I see the option of specifying an image URL as a workaround, but not as the solution. I was really hoping for having Power BI fetching data from a binary column just like SSAS. After all we can do this with Power View since SharePoint and Excel 2010.

If I go about specifyign images URL now I have to place my images in some sort of public accessible http server, which is quite annoying, really 😞

Any news on this? I'd really like to display images stored in an SSAS MD cube, with live connection.

So there's also not the possibility to mark a column as image in the model, since you cannot edit anything.
