I am learning Dax and just loaded DaxStudio, how do I develope measures

Hi I want to start learning how to write Measures in dax studio, but not sure how I would go about it.  For example I have a simple measure, SalesAmount:=SUM([Amount]).  How can I run this in Dax studio?  I tried just the =SUM([Amount]) and got nothing, added the = sign and got nothing.  Do I have to do in the contaext of an expression that returns a table?  What is the best way to develope complex Dax measures?

My model is in Tabular 2016.  I can connect to the model and see my Cube, tables and columns

Any help appreciated, Thanks,

Mike

Are you connected to a PBI Model or Tabular Server?

When you pull up DAX Studio, it should ask you to connect to something.
