How to Exclude Excel spreadsheet columns with confidential data before Import?

Senior Mgmt have Master Excel spreadsheets with confidential data columns. (SSN, Salary Info. etc.)

Senario 1:

How do I exclude these confidential data columns from being imported to Power BI Desktop BEFORE Getting data?

Senario 2:

As, I CANNOT exclude these confidential data columns from being imported to Power BI Destop BEFORE getting data (current functionality), I am given a copy of the Master file with the confidential columns deleted and then work my way to create the data model. Now, when I change my Data Source settings to link back to the Master Spreadsheet and Apply the changes, the DataSet seems to pull the confidential data columns again. Is the Data Model not independent of the spreadsheet? How can I  keep a Master copy of the Excel file but at the same time be able to create a Data Model for Senior Mgmt that works by excluding confidential data columns?

Senario 3:

These confidential columns are deleted from the Master Spreadsheet before the data model is created. The initial data model excludes the confidential data. We wish to REFRESH the data model with updated data from the Original master spreadsheet which now includes the confidential columns. How do we do that?

We are also aware of the Refresh (button in Ribbon) / Refresh Data (in context menu) and they do bring in all the coulmns. It does not compare the delta changes and asks for user confirmation before importing the changes, but brings in the entire spreadsheet and reconstructs the entire Data model.

Please suggest an approach/solution to be able to exclude 'confidential' data columns from being imported to Power BI Destop BEFORE getting data AND we do not want to maintain copies of Excel Spreadheets !!

Hi @pdk,

Current power bi not support operate original source before get data.(excel not contains the additional query to config the selected columns)

Perhaps you can try below methods:

1. Make a copy of original file and remove the confidential columns, then get data from copied file.

2. Use power query remove specific columns from source data.

Reference link:

Table.SelectColumns

Table.RemoveColumns
