Data Column Refresh After Unpivot

Dear All ,

I'm not sure how to refresh data after i append all of the sheets and unpivot all of the columns in one. Once i wanna get the column update in excel and refresh , here's how the BI messaged as per attached. As per Red Highlight Column on 1/18/2018 didn't update and pop up the message on BI . Can anybody assist me whether we still can update the column or No ?

Hi @Chanleakna123,

Since you have steps to transform Excel sheet columns, go to Query Editor and click Advanced Editor, you will see the Power Query explicitly mention column names. Whatever the old column is deleted or new column added, you need to modify the column names used in Power Query ( it can simply achieved by modify applied steps which you already done). I'm afraid this is unavoidable.

Hi @Chanleakna123,

If you modify the Excel data, you can click refresh button in desktop to get updated data. But if you modify Excel structure like add column, change column, it will not be reflected in Power BI report.

In your scenario, it seems there are some data structure changed in Excel file. Please open Query Editor in Power BI desktop, then check which step has issue when refresh, please correct it.

@v-qiuyu-msft hi ,
I deleted and added new column in excel file , refresh  and then refresh in  BI, BI pops up warning message as attached.

Hi @Chanleakna123,

Have you opened Query Editor to check each step?

As the column is deleted in source Excel file, you need to modify Power Query to get data. Please check each step from Source step listed in Applied Steps to ensure each step works fine.

@v-qiuyu-msft hi Dear ,
I had fixed this by going to Query Editor > ( insert )Step between Promote Header and unpivot > refresh data > new data from excel comes in >Unpivot the columns again. Since i always have new columns added everyday. Do i need to repeat this everyday? Do we have any best practices on this ?
I'm sorry if i'm wrong , since i'm new here.

HI everyone,

i'm new here. i'm not sure whether we can fix this. I used excel data which has a lots of columns in Date Columns , I import into Power BI and then choose Unpivot other columns to be in a row, It works good. but after that i turn to Excel file and delete one of the date columns and then refresh in PBI , it said the Column Number 15 not found. Is there any way i can settle this ? Delete and add data in Excel and refresh the data in PBI to be okay.
seems like i can;t remove the data in Excel only to add more.

Thanks with Best Regards,
