Have you visited the Power BI Galleries recently? You may wonder what inspired this rich resource for the Power BI community. In late 2016 Sandy Rivas, Community Strategy Manager for Microsoft’s Business Application Group, came up with an idea to motivate members to contribute to the community, educate each other, and celebrate the users through kudos. She worked with her all-woman team to create the Data Stories Gallery and then launched the Motivate-Educate-Celebrate campaign

The goal of the campaign was to inspire community members to contribute to the gallery. The community involvement was a huge success! The community members were excited to show off their work and connect with other talented peers. Additionally, the Data Stories Gallery became a great resource for the community and became an inspiration for creating additional galleries. We were so thrilled with the results that we submitted an entry for the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.

We’re excited and humbled to receive the gold Stevie® Award at the 14th annual competition for the “Communications or PR Campaign of the Year – Internal Communications” category. This category recognizes excellence in public relations, press relations, and publicity programs by or for women. Our win is a win for the community. You’ve all contributed some valuable content and made this place a great resource for fellow Power BI users around the globe.

What is the Motivate-Educate-Celebrate Campaign?
The campaign rests on three pillars:
1.  MOTIVATE members to contribute and engage by building trust and demonstrating value
2.  EDUCATE people by facilitating access to information, displaying examples of what other members have done, and providing more opportunities to participate
3.  CELEBRATE the users through badges and recognition

Each month our team gave users a theme for Gallery entries. The community staff or industry guest judges evaluated the most recent submitted stories. The best data stories were highlighted, and one was selected as the “Story of the Month”. All the best submissions were also featured on the Power BI blog, which in turn drove additional traffic to the Gallery and results in heightened exposure for the contributor.

Once the Data Stories Gallery launched successfully, the community team replicated its success across other new galleries. Together, these galleries provide users with the information they want when they want it. It builds trust and motivates them to participate in the community, which then provides them with recognition and feedback that adds value and facilitates learning. This creates a virtuous Demonstrate Participate – Celebrate cycle.
