Newbie to visuals development

First of all thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

There are quite a few videos and resources for custom visual development.

However for someone who is new to typescript it is easy to be overwhelmed with all the information.

What is in your opinion the best approach to start learning about custom visual development (after watching your vidoes of course)?

  • Look at existing custom visuals code?
  • Start from scratch?
  • Look at javascript using D3.js (found in https://d3js.org/)
  • Do a course
  • Other

Cheers,

Miguel

Re: Newbie to visuals development

There are quite a few learning curves.

  1. TypeScript
  2. D3 library
  3. NMP-style development
  4. The PBIVIZ  utility
  5. The Custom Visuals API
  6. General Design Issues for custom visual development

Remember that you do not have to take all these learning curves at once, but I always advocate the seperate and conquer philosophy. I learned by doing things like going through tutorials on NPM and TypeScript and walking through D3 tutorials using JavaScript because they did not have the tutorial in TypeScript.

But also make sure to be working with the PBIVIZ CLI tool as much as you can. Finally, don't be too hard on yourself to get up to speed on everthing in a week. Set reasonable expectations for getting up to speed on so many new techologies.

Re: Newbie to visuals development

The direction you should be headed is "forward" - Onward and upward
